“My Story – My Words” is a project about the migrant experience in Ireland, and how migrants have to translate themselves into new words and new contexts in order to be understood.
From May to October 2017, we will interview people who have moved to Ireland from non-English speaking countries, focusing on the autobiographical component of the migrant experience. In an increasingly multilingual and multicultural Europe, we believe it is important not to overlook the relevance of individual stories and the role that language plays in the communication of cultural identities. The language experience of the single immigrant is the key to greater societal understanding and inclusion.
We will bring together NGOs, scholars and visual artists from Ireland and from the rest of Europe. Our goal is to establish a public forum for intercultural encounter, and create new opportunities for research, reporting and advocacy, in order to question models of citizenship and language policies.
“My Story – My Words” has received funding from the Irish Research Council under the New Foundation Scheme.
